The stained glass windows and other objects are of historical importance to the community. Fashioned in a Dalle de Verre method, the windows mark an era of revitalized interest in the glass decorative arts in the United States. Unlike traditional leaded church stained glass, these windows contain no religious imagery and are set in a concrete frame; thus, they can be used in a variety of lit or unlit applications from a vertical or horizontal window mounting to a table or room divider. The colors are brilliant . . . deep blues, golds and turquoises . . . and have a gem like quality. The effect when lit transforms a wall or window into a cascading, brilliant mural of luminous beauty.

Because the Baptist Sanctuary carries a local historic landmark designation, the city officials have been reluctant to issue a permit for demolition. St. Petersburg Preservation Inc. has urged that the sanctuary be retained. The Cathedral tried unsuccessfully to market the building and faced onerous maintenance costs. The city has approved the plan for the columbarium, and the SPPI has given its strong support to the plan, which preserves the street side façade and re-purposes the back of the building as a columbarium and peace garden.

“Salvage is an integral part of the community, because it provides a link between past and future”, says Jesse White, owner of Sarasota Architectural Salvage, “It’s actually a very spiritual process. When building get demolished, the historically important and decorative elements can be saved for reuse. This keeps the spirit of the original structure alive.” White hopes that the event will draw buyers from the preservation community, antiques dealers and church parishioners.

Sarasota Architectural Salvage was founded in 2003 by Jesse White. The retail store located in Sarasota is open to the public and wholesale community, Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm. It specializes in antique and collectible building materials, furniture, and home decor. It is a certified Sarasota County Green Business, and offers environmentally preferable and green building products for sale.

Proceeds from the sale and Donations help support historic preservation work to create the columbarium, in keeping with the historical character of the original structure and maintaining the frontal facade of the First Baptist Sanctuary. All supporters will receive priority entrance to the exhibit, bring a copy of your email receipt and go to the front of the line "Reservation Table".
